BRIEF HISTORY OF AKOKWA AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY.

Location and bordering towns

The town has a natural strategic position as a border town between Imo and Anambra State located at about 75km west of Owerri the eastern heartland.Its position as a border town turned the community as the commercial nerve center of Ideato North Local government..

Akokwa n’Ohaigiri as its being called is made up of six villages namely:

  • Uzouhu Okwara village.
  • Umuloloihedi village.
  • Ikpa village.
  • Uhualla village.
  • Umueze village.
  • Umuezedike village.

The protection of this enormous cultural heritage rests on the shoulder of its paramount ruler HRH EZE IKENNA C OKOLI V AGBAKWURUIBE 111 OBI OF AKOKWA 11TH.It is a town with hierarchical,pyramidal,socio economic structure in which the traditional ruler is at the apex and chosen from the lineage of umuezesiobula family in Uzouhu Okwara village.The genealogy of this great kingdom from the time of record span for over five hundred years to the present. The order of succession to the throne is seen below:

  • Ezesiobula 1600-1650
  • Dimesoro 1650-1770
  • Okwaraononihu 1770-1880
  • Ukachukwu 1880-1924
  • Okoli 1908-1944

  • Patrick 1952-1976
  • Osita 1976-2002
  • Ikenna 2002-till present

Akokwa is an ancient kingdom in Ideato North Local government area within Imo State in Nigeria.The town has a natural strategic position as a border town between Imo and Anambra State located at about 50km west of Owerri the eastern heartland.Its position as a border town turned the community as the commercial nerve center of Ideato North Local government.

Okwara as the first son takes the first share(koo-anu which comprises of the chest,heart and lungs) whenever a cow is being slaughtered at any festival ceremony at the ekuro shrine(juju) or at any other cultural ceremony followed by Ezeaga and the rest.

These six villages were sons of Okwa who was believed to be
the father of Akokwa with Okwara being the first son followed by
Ezeaga,Akwu,Owerre,Opia and Okegwu.There names birthed the nomenclature of
their descendants that brought about the six villages that made up the old
Akokwa.Okwara being the first son on whose shoulder lies the responsibility of
protecting and preserving the culture of the community inherited the following
paraphernalia from the father inorder to discharge his duties effectively such
as: 

1.The staff of office as the paramount ruler of Akokwa.

 

2.Onodo-nze.

3.Afor Akokwa,afor okwara where pagan funeral ceremonies are performed by all the villages.

4.Ala ndisii.

5.Aja agbogho,where young girls perform certain rituals at the stage of puberty before marriage.

6.Ajaala and otutu ihe ndi nze for the funeral ceremonies of Ozo and Nze title men for the whole kingdom.
